How to partition external hard drive on Mac
Have an external hard drive on which you would like, for example, have both backup Time Machine , like all your music files and photos. For better separate the two functions, ideally divide your hard drive into two partitions , thus being able to use all the space you have for completely different things. Start by connecting the external hard drive to your Mac
Then, go to Finder> Applications> Utilities> Disk Utility. Double click on the latter.
A window whose left column different hard disks on your Mac (internal and external) appear opens. Click on the partition you want.
In the tabs at the top of the selected disc menu, click ” Partition “and, once there, in the” + “symbol on the bottom of the white box with the partition layout.
The white rectangle appears now divided into two half. If you do not want the partitions are the same, you just have to move the line up or down to set how much you want it each division.
Click on each of the partitions and you want them linked the name (also see exactly how much space is each). When finished, click ” Apply “.
Unsure if a new dialog box appears asking. Click on ” Partition . ”
It will begin the process of creating the new partition. You can follow its evolution in the lower part of the window of Disk Utility . Be patient!
When the process completes, the new partition will appear in the left menu, under the name of the hard disk.
